Don't lose all of your "gusto."

Andrews battles his weight
The grieving Eagles guard is trying to gain control of his weight.
By Ashley Fox- Philly Inquirer
A slimmed-down Shawn Andrews tries to lift sumo wrestler Casey Burns, whose listed weight is 460 pounds, during a visit to the NovaCare Complex.

This is about food, and fat, and fear.
His whole life, Shawn Andrews has struggled with food. Pancakes drowned in syrup. Cheesesteaks. Baked macaroni. Pizza.
After the Eagles' season ended in January, Andrews gained 10 pounds, pushing perilously close to a weight that began with the number four. He made a decision. Enough was enough. He had to stop.
In April, weeks into a diet that was showing results, Andrews went to a park near his Arkansas home with a childhood buddy named Willie. The two had ridden the bus together to third grade, had pigged out in home economics class, had played hoops. Like Andrews, Willie was a big man, but unlike Andrews, he had stopped working out years ago.
That day, Andrews and Willie sat at the park watching the cars go by, talking about their lives and winking at girls. Afterward, Andrews went to Subway, ordering a chicken teriyaki sandwich on whole wheat bread, Sun chips, and a bottle of water. Two hours later, he got the call. Willie was dead, apparently of a heart attack brought on by high blood pressure. He was 23.
"It was tough," the 23-year-old Andrews said yesterday. "It was bad. It's been about a month now. I don't want to die because I'm too fat. Everybody has problems. Everybody has things they have to work on, you know. Everybody's human.
"But it's just one of the things I've been faced with for a long time, and hopefully I can keep it under control."
By definition, offensive linemen in the NFL are supposed to be large, immovable objects. If Andrews were not big and strong, he would not be making large sums of money playing a game Sundays in the fall.
But nearly 400 pounds? The Eagles' right guard didn't want that, and yesterday after eating half a tuna wrap and a Caesar salad - with four olives, he pointed out - for lunch, Andrews reported that he has dropped nearly 35 pounds. He is following a strict diet and working out twice daily, and now is down to from 355 to 358 pounds.
After working out with the Eagles' rookies yesterday, Andrews showed off his slimmed-down physique for a slew of cameras at the NovaCare Complex, where he helped a couple of sumo wrestlers promote an event at the Wachovia Center.
Andrews let the wrestlers teach him a few basics of their sport, and laughed after one, who was visibly lighter, easily picked him off the ground and moved him a few feet. He clearly was the happy, affable player the Eagles selected with the 16th overall pick in the 2004 draft.
"I definitely have more energy," Andrews said. "I can get in my stance without my stomach being all in the way, and huffing and puffing. I can fire off the ball like the old me. I can, right now if I had to, go for six or seven quarters, I believe."
Entering the 2005 season after missing almost all of his rookie year with a broken right leg, Andrews was listed at 340 pounds but played at a higher weight. He said his goal is to come into training camp around 355, although he acknowledged that his optimal weight was the 345 pounds he played at during his freshman year at Arkansas.
Could he get too skinny? Could he become too light? Could he get too comfortable with losing weight? Andrews said no, not a chance. For him, weight will always be a battle.
"I'd say if I could get down to 200 pounds, I could probably eat my way back in a week to 350," Andrews said.
What losing weight will do, Andrews said, is give him the athleticism to block downfield without getting winded. He said that if he ever got far downfield last year, he would hope for a defensive penalty, so he'd have a few extra moments to recover.
"I just think it's going to be a lot better for me, a lot more beautiful to see me pulling around on the slow screen right," Andrew said. "Just, wow. It's going to be great, man. You'll see, Lord willing, I make it through training camp healthy, which I will. It's going to be exciting... .
"I'm trying to give you the side of me to be healthy the rest of my life. When you talk about me, I want it to be, 'Hey, he could be the next LeBron James of the offensive line.' "
So for now, Andrews will continue watching what he eats, save for a weekly trip to a Philadelphia restaurant for a filet mignon and lobster tail, with a side of asparagus. He will mourn his friend Willie, who died much too young. And he will continue to study successful linemen who are on the lighter side, like Minnesota Vikings guard Steve Hutchinson (who is listed at 313 pounds) and San Francisco 49ers guard Larry Allen (325).
"I'm just kind of taking it upon myself to realize you're a grown man, you have responsibilities," Andrews said. "You're still a mama's boy. You just have to... change your eating habits and work out more."
And then, Andrews added quietly: "I'm really proud of myself."

Met Draftee Bloom

Sooooo, tonight (may 16, for some reason the date is messed up) I had the opportunity to go to the Olympic Winter Games dinner in Washington, D.C. as a part of my job. Rosenhaus did not immediately return messages Monday evening.
One league source, acknowledging that there is virtually no chance for a trade, called the move "a formality," and agreed Owens eventually will be cut and then sign elsewhere as a free agent. Granting permission for a trade might be a last-gasp effort by the Eagles to try to elicit something in return for Owens before being forced to release him in less than two months.
Owens
His off-field actions aside, it is believed that Owens, still a premier playmaker, will draw interest from several teams once he is released. Rosenhaus has been able to orchestrate trades under difficult circumstances in the past, but finding a franchise that is inclined to surrender even a low-round draft choice for Owens might be expecting too much.
Philadelphia could, of course, arrange a trade on its own. But given Owens' contract status, and the likelihood any team acquiring him would probably need him to rework his existing deal, his cooperation would be necessary.
Owens, 32, has five seasons remaining on the seven-year, $49 million contract he signed with Philadelphia after the Eagles acquired him in a three-team trade in 2004. In March he is due two roster bonuses totaling $7.5 million -- one a payment of $5 million on March 5 and a second payment of $2.5 million later in the month.
Certainly, with what transpired during this season, Owens cannot return to the Eagles and teams interested in him will use that knowledge to their advantage.
The 10-year veteran, one of the game's premier receivers, was suspended twice last season, once during summer training camp for a week, then at midseason. He appeared in a career-low seven games and caught 47 passes for 763 yards and six touchdowns.
In November, arbitrator Richard Bloch upheld the Eagles' right to suspend Owens four games for conduct detrimental to the team, and to place him on the inactive list every week after that for the balance of the season. The in-season suspension cost Owens $764,705 of his scheduled $3.25 million base salary for 2005.
The Eagles are also trying to recover $1.725 million, a prorated share of the $8.5 million signing bonus Owens received in '04. The NFL Players' Association has filed a grievance on his behalf in that case. It is not known when the grievance will be heard.
Owens, who began his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers as a third-round pick in the 1996 draft, has 716 career receptions for 10,535 yards and 101 touchdowns. He has appeared in 142 games (128 as a starter) and has been chosen for the Pro Bowl five times.
Senior writer Len Pasquarelli covers the NFL for ESPN.com.

Childress to Minnesota...Mornhinweg to replace

So it happened. The EAGLES lost one of the best offensive minds in the NFL. It's not as though we didn't see it coming. Childress was highly valued and sought after the second coaches started getting fired. Brad will begin as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings and will make that a team to contend with very quickly. Thanks for all of your hard work, Brad. You've made the EAGLES offensive attack one of the most enjoyable in the NFL to watch. Marty Mornhinweg will replace Childress as the offensive coordinator.

philadelphiaeagles.com reports:

READY TO SEIZE THE MOMENT
January 6, 2006By DAVE SPADARO Marty Mornhinweg has been named the assistant head coach/offensive coordinator of the Eagles. Mornhinweg replaces Brad Childress, the new head coach in Minnesota.
Mornhinweg joined the Eagles prior to the 2003 season as the team's assistant head coach and worked extensively with the Eagles' offensive staff in preparing game plans and executing the West Coast offense.
Mornhinweg is the Eagles' new offensive coordinator He has a wealth of experience in the scheme, notably as the offensive coordinator in San Francisco from 1997-2000 and then as the head coach in Detroit from 2001-2002.
"Marty has demonstrated that he is one of the top offensive minds in the game and he's proven that throughout his NFL coaching career," said head coach Andy Reid. "We're happy to have had him on staff for the past three seasons and with that we feel this transition will be seamless for him and for the rest of the coaching staff."
Mornhinweg, 43, originally came to Philadelphia as a senior assistant coach in 2003 after spending the previous two seasons as head coach of the Detroit Lions. In his three seasons with the Eagles, Mornhinweg has worked closely with Reid and the rest of the offensive staff.
In 2004, the Eagles had one of the most prolific offenses in the history of the franchise, as they set club records in QB rating (96.4), completion percentage (61.4%), and gross yards passing (4,208).
Mornhinweg also served as the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers from 1997-2000, where in 1998 the 49ers became the first team since the 1941 Chicago Bears to lead the league in both gross passing and rushing yards.
Reid and Mornhinweg worked together as offensive assistant coaches in Green Bay from 1995-96, and in 1996 Mornhinweg tutored the Packers quarterbacks as Brett Favre captured MVP honors in leading his team to a Super Bowl 31 win over New England.
In his ten-year stint in the NFL, Mornhinweg has coached four quarterbacks to Pro Bowl honors: Favre, Donovan McNabb, Steve Young and Jeff Garcia.

N.O. Invite to T.O. birthday bash?

For some odd reason, this beloved blogger did not get his invite to the Terrell Owens Birthday bash. The ex-EAGLES wide receiver turned 32 the other day (a couple days after I did). This leads me to the notion that maybe a 32 year old "star" receiver is not that big of a loss. One could make the argument that he was getting frail?

as reported by the home tribune news....
Dec 13, 12:09 AM EST
T.O.'s birthday bash guest list includes NFL stars
By ROB MAADDI AP Sports Writer
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) -- Terrell Owens doesn't need to score touchdowns to celebrate.
Exiled from the Philadelphia Eagles last month, the All-Pro wide receiver known for his flamboyant end zone theatrics hosted a birthday party Monday night at rapper Jay-Z's 40-40 club. T.O. turned 32 on Dec. 7.
The bash drew several NFL stars, some of Owens' former teammates on the Eagles and a few celebrities.
Among the celebrities on the guest list were Jamie Foxx, Will Smith, Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson and the Rev. Jesse Jackson.
Former Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin, former Bears coach Mike Ditka, Redskins running back Clinton Portis and Redskins wide receiver Santana Moss also were invited. Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis was a surprise name on the list - he and Owens feuded last year when Owens spurned a trade from San Francisco to Baltimore.
Owens arrived shortly before midnight, wearing a white suit. "Everything's great. It's a party," he said. "I have everything I want. My mom's here."
Owens posed for picture and went inside. Neither he nor his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, answered questions from reporters.
A day earlier, the reigning conference champion Eagles were eliminated from playoff contention with their sixth loss in seven games. Jevon Kearse and Lito Sheppard were among the 11 Eagles who had arrived at the party by 11:15.
"It's a wonderful event and I'm just showing some support," Kearse said. "He's a wonderful teammate."
Receiver Darnerien McCants was the first Eagles player to arrive. He was followed by tight ends L.J. Smith, Stephen Spach and Andy Thorn and injured linebacker Greg Richmond.
No, Donovan McNabb didn't show up in his dancing shoes, even though he also was invited. The injured quarterback and Owens have feuded since the Eagles lost to New England in the Super Bowl last February.
Scantily clad women wearing different colored No. 81 jerseys with question marks representing the team name provided some of the entertainment for the guests. Owens hadn't arrived by 10:30 p.m.
The party invitations arrived last week and were shaped like a penalty flag. They read: "There's a flag on the play? After further review, No. 81 is at it again."
"It's a party. It's a celebration of another year of life," said Kim Etheredge, Owens' publicist.
"I would go to battle with T.O. any day of the week. A lot of people don't understand him," said former Eagles receiver Freddie Mitchell, one of early arrivals.
Owens still is officially a member of the Eagles, but he was banned from team activities and sent home for good last month.
Owens was suspended Nov. 5 after he again criticized McNabb, called the organization "classless" and fought with former teammate Hugh Douglas. Two days later, the Eagles extended the suspension to four games and told Owens not to return.
On Nov. 23, an arbitrator upheld the decision, ruling that the Eagles were justified in their actions.
The Eagles deactivated Owens twice already as planned and will do so for the final three games. They'll likely trade or release Owens before March, when he's due a $5 million roster bonus.
Owens' suspension without pay cost him $764,706 of his $3.25 million base salary for this season. He is owed $955,882 over the final five games.
The Eagles informed Owens he must repay $1.725 million of the $2.3 million signing bonus he received in March 2004. The NFL Players' Association filed a grievance against the Eagles last Tuesday, claiming the team breached Owens' contract by trying to get back part of the bonus and by leaving him inactive for the rest of the season.
Owens has five years remaining on a seven-year, $48.97 million contract that he signed when he came to Philadelphia last year. His problems started when he demanded a new contract after an outstanding season in which he caught 77 passes for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns, helping the Eagles reach the Super Bowl for the first time in 24 years.
Owens was kicked out of training camp for one week after a heated dispute with coach Andy Reid that followed a shouting match with offensive coordinator Brad Childress.
Owens also annoyed the Eagles by violating the dress code on road trips, parking in coaches' spots at the team's practice facility and sleeping through one team meeting, not bringing his playbook to another and refusing to open the playbook at another meeting.
One day after the Eagles banished him, a contrite Owens pleaded for another chance in a public apology outside his home in Moorestown, but the team was unmoved.
Owens was set to earn base salaries of $770,000 in 2006, $5.5 million in 2007, $6.5 million in 2008, $7.5 million in 2009, and $8.5 million in 2010.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://eaglesreview.blogspot.com/2005/12/no-invite-to-to-birthday-bash.html' title='N.O. Eagles lose control in last 4 minutes

This was worse than any Terrell Owens controversy.

This was the Eagles' Doomsday, and it had more to do with one of the worst passes of Donovan McNabb's career than it did with the Dallas Cowboys' defense.

Seemingly in control of a game they had to win, the Eagles collapsed in the final four minutes and lost, 21-20, to the Cowboys last night at Lincoln Financial Field.

The loss left the Eagles at 4-5 overall, 1-4 against NFC opponents, and 0-3 in the division. They have lost three games in a row for the first time since the 1999 season, when they were 5-11. The Cowboys swept the season series with the Eagles for the first time since 1998.

What appeared to be a perfectly wonderful evening for the Eagles fell apart in the final four minutes.

The Cowboys, 6-3 and in a first-place tie with the New York Giants in the division, completed their improbable comeback when McNabb tried to hit rookie Reggie Brown for a first down along the right sideline.

Instead, Cowboys safety Roy Williams jumped the pattern and picked off the McNabb pass. With linebacker Scott Shanle as his lead blocker, Williams went 46 yards into the end zone to even the score, 20-20, with 2 minutes, 43 seconds remaining. Shaun Suisham's PAT made it 21-20. Injury was added to McNabb's insult when Shanie knocked him to the turf. It appeared as if the quarterback injured his right ankle on the play.

McNabb came back for the next series, but he threw two incomplete passes and was sacked for a 7-yard loss. He was replaced by third-string quarterback Mike McMahon when the Eagles went out for their final series.

McMahon took the Eagles to Dallas' 42-yard line and David Akers attempted a 60-yard field goal on the final play of the game that fell short.

Down by 20-7, the desperate Cowboys had taken control of the ball at their 28-yard line with 3:44 remaining.

Four plays and 40 seconds later, Dallas had gone 72 yards to pull within six points. Quarterback Drew Bledsoe started the comeback with a 15-yard completion to Keyshawn Johnson and an 11-yard strike to Terry Glenn. After rookie Marion Barber ripped off a 26-yard run to the Eagles' 20, Glenn got past cornerback Lito Sheppard in the right corner of the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown that pulled the Cowboys within six points.

Before the final four minutes, this appeared as if it would be a night in which the Eagles got their season headed back in the right direction.

They displayed a competent running game and applied pressure on the quarterback, two ingredients that were missing in their first eight games this season.

The combination of Brian Westbrook, Lamar Gordon and McNabb helped the Eagles put up a season-high 181 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. They had just two rushing touchdowns going into the game.

Defensively, the Eagles got two sacks from rookie Trent Cole and what appeared to be a game-turning hurry from Jeremiah Trotter late in the second quarter.

With the game tied, 7-7, and 2:59 remaining in the half, defensive coordinator Jim Johnson dialed up a Trotter blitz. The middle linebacker went in untouched on Bledsoe. Feeling the pressure, the Cowboys quarterback tried a hook-shot dump to Barber.

Instead, the ball landed in Sheppard's hands and the cornerback lunged forward 5 yards to the Dallas 19-yard line.

As they had on their opening drive, the Eagles went heavy on the run to push the ball into the end zone for the go-ahead score. McNabb finished the drive with a play-fake run around right end for his first rushing touchdown since last season.

He followed it up with his Michael Jackson moonwalk.

That score put the Eagles up by 14-7 at the half. They built the lead to 20-7 on a couple of field goals by Akers - a 48-yarder in the third quarter and a 20-yarder with 9:12 remaining.

McNabb had promised for weeks that the Eagles would surprise everybody one of these days by coming out and running the ball. This was the game, and the Cowboys seemed surprised when the home team took the opening kick and went into run mode.

The Eagles' offense went 72 yards on 11 plays for the team's first score on an opening drive since Week 2 against San Francisco when that Owens chap pulled in a 68-yard pass from McNabb on the third play of the game.

This time, the Eagles went by a script that included an astonishing seven running plays. They covered 46 yards with their ground game - more rushing yards than they had in four of their first eight games this season.

The Eagles ran just nine times for 19 yards when they were beaten, 33-10, in Dallas last month.

The flurry of successful runs started with a designed quarterback draw that McNabb took for 9 yards and a first down. It ended with Westbrook bursting outside for a 15-yard touchdown run with 6:06 left in the opening quarter.

Dallas answered the Eagles' opening drive late in the first quarter, thanks to a big play by Peerless Price, one of the Cowboys' weapons that was mostly concealed during the first half of the season.

On a third-and-10 play from the Dallas 39-yard line, Bledsoe was given a chance to go deep when Barber blocked a blitzing Michael Lewis. Price, matched with safety Brian Dawkins, got free in the middle of the field, and Bledsoe hit his receiver in stride for a 58-yard gain to the Eagles' 3-yard line.

Barber was rewarded for his block on Lewis with three consecutive carries, including a 1-yard touchdown that pulled the Cowboys even.

The next 44 minutes belonged to the Eagles, but the final four went the Cowboys' way. Now, the Eagles appear to be just another Super Bowl loser who can't find their way.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://eaglesreview.blogspot.com/2005/11/what-heck-eagles-lose-control-in-last.html' title='What the heck?!?! Don't ask me what the hell that means... pain?

The Eagles brought Lewis in on Tuesday night and he worked out on Wednesday. He will practice with the team on Wednesday and should be uniform Monday night to play the cowboys, and is expected to be the team's No. 2 tight end, behind starter L.J. Smith.

Some of Smith's Accomplishments: Lewis led all NFC tight ends in 2000 with 69 receptions en route to his first Pro Bowl selection. In 11 postseason contests, he has posted a team record 38 receptions for 409 yards and 3 scores, including a pair of touchdowns in last year's NFC Championship game win over Atlanta.

Welcome Back Chad!!! Owens did not answer questions from the reporters gathered at his New Jersey home.
The Eagles had no comment on Tuesday afternoon.
"As you know, I have been suspended and I told that I cannot play football for the rest of the season. I am a football player and this is what I do," said Owens, reading a prepared statement. "It really hurts me not to be part of the team anymore. I came here to help the Eagles get to the Super Bowl and win the big game.
"When I got hurt last year, and everyone said my season was over, I fought hard to prove the world was wrong and do everything possible, including risk my career, to help the Eagles win the Super Bowl.
"And I think the mentality that I have, my greatest strength can also be my greatest weakness. I'm a fighter -- I've always been and I'll always be. I fight for what I think is right. In doing so, I alienated a lot of my fans and my teammates.
"To those fans who supported me through these tough times, I thank you for your support. To every single Philadelphia Eagles fan out there that cheered for me, I want you to know that I am sorry this has happened. To you, I apologize.
"To my teammates, a lot of you have been a friend to me and I appreciate that. I can't tell you how much I wanted to fight along your side to take this team to victory. It was very painful for me not to be there with you against the Redskins last weekend, and it was more painful for me now that I won't be there with you Monday night.
"Also, I would like to reiterate my respect for Donovan McNabb as a quarterback and as a teammate. I apologize to him for any comments that may have been negative.
"To my head coach, Andy Reid, I owe you an apology. You and I were in a tough spot this year. I know you were just trying to coach this team and we did not see eye to eye sometimes. On the practice field and on game day, you knew you could count on me to give my very best. We had a lot of wins together, and I thank you for that. I respect you as a coach and as a person.
"To Joe Banner (team president) and Mr. (Jeffrey) Lurie (Chairman/CEO), I understand that all along you were trying to do what you believed was in the best interest of the team, the Philadelphia Eagles. I apologize to the both of you.
"As I said before, this is very painful for me to be in this position. I know in my heart that I can help the team win the Super Bowl and not only be a dominant player, but also be a team player. I can bring that.
"In closing, I want everybody to know that football is my passion. I've always given it my all and I will continue to do so."
Then Rosenhaus took the stand and told the media that he felt the media did not portray Owens in the proper light. Rosenhaus refused to answer many of the questions, including one that asked, "Would he be in this position today if it weren't for you?" Another question Rosenhaus did not answer: "You've been with Terrell for five months, what have you done for him other than getting him kicked off the team?"
Rosenhaus said he hoped the Eagles would re-consider the suspension and the decision that Owens would not play the remainder of the season for the team. In fact, Rosenhaus said, he hoped Owens would practice on Wednesday and be with the team for Monday night's game against the Cowboys.
"He wants to play football for the Philadelphia Eagles. He wants to play right away," said Rosenhaus.
Reid made the statement on Monday that there would be no further comment from the team regarding Owens. On Tuesday, the Eagles again had no comment on Owens' latest apology and press conference.

We're Rid of TO

Thank GOD!!!!!!! Finally that little annoying prick is gone. I can't tell you how much this will do to this idea of CHEMISTRY!
Am I totally convinced that this is the end-all solution to the current woes? No, but it's a good start. When you take such a controversial, high-strung, and (many would say) selfish figure out of the locker-room, there is a chance for healing.
I personally don't think that TO is such a bad guy personally, as I'm not at the Nova Care complex on a daily basis. When reading a lot of the transcripts of interviews he's given, I have come to this conclusion... HIRE A PRESS SECRETARY!!!!!!!! Drew Rosenhaus SUCKS and is one of the worst agents in the history of crappy agents. I do feel badly for TO in some regards, that this situation has spun out of control... but as my dad always says, "There's a time in every man's life where you step back and say, that is my fault, let me fix it."
In that vein, I was wrong above when I called TO a "little annoying prick." And, I apologize to TO for it. See? It's not too tough. I can do it, and I don't make millions of dollars.

Developing...

Eagles sputter against the skins

I can't believe it, the Eagles had a chance to prove the naysayers wrong to get back in the hunt for the NFC East lead.
